Digital Fry Phrases - Fluency Practice for Distance Learning

Do your students need fluency practice during remote learning? Of course they do! Fluency isn't the most exciting thing to practice and other than reading books and passages, there's not a lot for kids to do at home to practice fluency.

I love using Fry words to practice, but real reading isn't just words in isolation. I created my Fry Phrases Pack several years ago for fluency practice. (Click on the pictures to see the print version in my store). But since we're all teaching either partially or fully remote, we just don't have as much time in the classroom to do ALL.THE.THINGS.

I thought, how can I use my Fry Phrases so kids can do them digitally? And my Digital Fry Phrases for Google Classroom were born! This video is a snippet from List 1.

I made them for Google Slides, and I wanted kids to be able to hear and then repeat the phrases. I included automatic sound so when they advance the slide, it automatically reads the phrase to them and then they can repeat it. I realized that some kids would not need to hear them before reading themselves so I made versions for each list with no sound.

There are 1000 Fry words, listed in order of frequency in the English language. They are divided into 10 lists. I created the digital phrases for each list 1-6. I am working on the digital lists 7-10. (I have the print form of lists 1-10). Click on the pictures to see the printable lists for 7-10 in my store.

Here's a video of my Digital Fry Phrases in action!

Gingerbread Man Resources for the Busy Teacher

Do you need some Gingerbread Man teaching ideas? The whole month of December, we are doing a holiday theme! We start off with a week of The Gingerbread Man. Then we do a week of Reindeer. And finally, a few days of The Grinch! Here are some of my favorite Gingerbread Man Activities!

The Gingerbread Man is not necessarily a holiday story, but I love using fairy tales throughout the year so this is my December favorite.

We read different versions of the story throughout the week.

During fluency practice, we read The Gingerbread Man Readers Theater. This is always a hit and they want to do it over and over!

Next, we read a nonfiction piece on how to bake a gingerbread man. Then we do a sequencing activity.

Here's a digital version of this resource!

Here are some Gingerbread Themed Centers that they get to use.

This one comes in addition, subtraction and mixed which is shown here.

Centers have been challenging since we are social distancing at school. This one helps students practice reading and writing sight words and they get to use MAGNIFYING GLASSES!
